Police Dog Gets His Final Farewell on Radio Call

Saying goodbye is never easy, especially when it’s to a partner who’s been by your side through thick and thin.

This is the story of Vilo, a valiant German Shepherd-Malinois from the Orem Police Department, and his handler, Quentin, as they approach the end of their remarkable journey together.

Initially, Vilo wasn’t too keen on Quentin, his new handler, after three years of service. Quentin recalls, “When I picked him up, he was growling at me the whole time on the way home.” Despite this challenging start, the pair soon found their rhythm, developing a bond that went beyond the line of duty. “He ends up becoming your brother and your partner,” Quentin reflects on their relationship.

Vilo’s career was nothing short of heroic. His natural instincts and trainability made him an invaluable asset in the search and prosecution of felons. The duo encountered numerous perilous situations, often facing armed criminals and securing areas for arrests. Quentin shares, “It’s a really heavy decision that you have to make… You put complete trust in him, and he trusts you.” Fortunately, both Vilo and Quentin emerged unscathed from these missions, with Vilo retiring with an exemplary record.

An Emotional Tribute Over the Airwaves

Vilo’s retirement was marked by a poignant radio call from his colleagues, a gesture that deeply moved Quentin. The message, filled with gratitude and respect, acknowledged Vilo’s dedication: “You deserve so much needed rest. Thank you for keeping your handlers safe over the course of your career, and bringing them home each and every day. You’ll be missed, K-9 Vilo 1042.”

Retirement has opened a new chapter for Vilo, now thriving as a family dog. His transition to a more relaxed lifestyle has been smooth, and he excels in his new role. Quentin and Vilo continue to share a life filled with joy, a testament to the incredible adaptability and loyalty of retired police dogs.
