He wasn’t content just waiting at the Antrim County Animal Shelter in Bellaire, Michigan. Instead, he embarked on secret nightly adventures, always ending up at a nursing home just a stone’s throw away.

What’s fascinating is Scout’s determination. Time and again, he’d return to the nursing home, even after being escorted back to the shelter, as if proclaiming, “This is my place. Please let me stay!”

Scout’s Midnight Adventures

Navigating to the Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility wasn’t easy. Scout had fences to climb, a busy highway to cross, and doors to sneak through. Yet, every night, he’d find his way in and cozy up on a comfortable lobby couch for a nap.

Initially, the staff would send him back to the shelter. But as Scout’s visits became a regular affair, they realized he had found his sanctuary. “It seemed like fate when Scout kept coming back,” shared Jennifer Martinek from MBMCF. Stephanie Elsey, a clinical care coordinator, added:

“We’ve welcomed him to be a part of our family. This is where he belongs. He chose us,” says Stephanie Elsey, a clinical care coordinator.”

From Resident to Healer

Scout wasn’t just another resident. He had a gift. He became an integral part of the facility, offering solace, especially to those grappling with terminal illnesses and dementia. “Whenever things seem bleak, Scout has a way of lifting spirits. He’s truly found his happiness here,” a resident commented.
