On an ordinary day, the sanctuary’s tranquil routine was touched by an unexpected visitor. A stray dog, weary and worn, found his way to the gates of OTGAS. His arrival did not go unnoticed, as the sanctuary’s residents sensed a new presence among them.
Bionca Smith recalls the moment vividly in an Instagram post, “He showed up at our gates at our sanctuary 10 minutes ago. The dogs were barking fervently, drawing my attention to a forlorn figure peering through the gates.”

A Moment of Connection:
Despite his imposing size and the initial hesitation, a unique connection sparked between Smith and the stray, whom she affectionately named Deputy. “His gaze, though somber, spoke volumes. It was a silent plea for help, a moment where fear gave way to trust,” Smith shared.

In a tender gesture, Deputy extended his paw to Smith, symbolizing his trust and hope. Smith, moved by this gesture, welcomed him into the sanctuary, marking the beginning of Deputy’s new life.
The Quarantine Ritual:
Before Deputy could fully integrate into his new family, he had to undergo quarantine. However, a special introduction was in order. “Kumo, our guardian dog and pack leader, had to meet Deputy first. Their introduction, though separated by a fence, was a touching moment of mutual acceptance,” Smith described.

Deputy’s transition into the sanctuary life was seamless. Within a week, he completed his quarantine and was joyfully accepted by the other residents. His days were filled with playful romps and his nights with comforting snuggles from his rescuer.
Smith reflects, “Deputy has found his place among us. He’s more relaxed each day, truly making himself at home.”
