The sick calf lay alone on the ground until a dog appeared that changed everything

Sky the therapy dog contributed to Lewis’ quick recovery.

In 2020, the Gentle Barn’s creators, Ellie Laks and Jay Weiner, adopted an abandoned calf. In a butcher’s shop, where his mother had perished, they rescued an orphaned calf. Just one week old, he was. They named him John Lewis Thunderheart since he was a fighter as well.

When he arrived at The Gentle Barn, Lewis was in bad shape. The pneumonia he had was quite bad. Loudly and raspily, he exhaled. A coughing fit plagued him. Ellie explained, “He had a very high fever.

Lewis’ stressful delivery experience prevented him from receiving enough colostrum to develop a stronger immune system. He fought for his life as a result of contracting pneumonia.

After realizing that he couldn’t survive in the barn, they moved him inside their air-conditioned home. In this way, they could provide him with round-the-clock care because he needs a clean, cold environment.

Lewis will ultimately gain a great deal from the presence of another animal inside the home.

Sky is his name.

Sky’s previous owner couldn’t keep up with his level of energy, so The Gentle Barn adopted him. Sky ended up being a great therapy dog, even though they had no intention of adopting him. He has the ability to lighten the mood, calm the anxious, and appease the irate.

For Lewis to recover from his injury, he was the perfect friend. Ellie noted that Sky shielded him, calmed him, and frequently cuddled up next to him. Until he began to recover gradually, we simply continued to show him love and comfort.

They could see that Lewis and Sky had developed a strong bond when Lewis was able to walk outside.

They quarrel and chase each other around the yard, Ellie said. “Sky is as mouthy as a puppy, and Lewis is as goofy as a cow, but they make it work and understand each other.

Sky was there to help Lewis get used to his new life on the farm when Ellie took him on walks around the property and introduced him to the other cows.

Lewis was born weighing only 50 pounds, and he was a week old. He is over 1,000 pounds and has already turned two. Compared to Sky, he has grown considerably.

Realizing there is a big weight difference between them, they are no longer as physical with one another. Nevertheless, they continue to show one another how much they care for one another.

Sky will lay Lewis when he falls to the earth. Before lying down close to Lewis, he will lick him. “Every time I see Sky and Lewis together, I am filled with gratitude. Ellie said of them, “What I adore about them is that no matter how old or large they become, their love never dies. We spot a cow and a dog. But only love, family, and friends are visible to John Lewis and Sky.
