They discovered the horrifying truth after closer inspection: there was a dog attached to the sled that had evidently been abandoned by someone. They must have left him here the previous evening with a cup of water and a message describing the horrible truth.

The message stated:

around ten years. can’t continue to walk very far.

Despite the fact that he had lived with them and been a medical dependent on them for a long time, they had no reservations about leaving him there. Thank goodness for groups like Wanderer’s Humane Associate, who took in the abandoned puppy and promptly gave him the name Perry.
