A 3D printed mask for a dog’s cracked skull was made by biomedical engineering students and veterinary surgeons at the University of California, Davis.

A unique 3D-printed mask was recently given to a four-month-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier dog. The mandibular joint, jawbone, and cheekbone of the little dog were all displaced. She also suffered numerous puncture wounds on her neck and face. The poor puppy had to undergo a challenging procedure.After her surgery, Loca put on the Exo-K9 Exoskeleton face mask that varsity biomedical engineering students had created especially for her. Thanks to the mask, her jawline stayed in place. Throughout her three days in the hospital, Loca did incredibly well, according to a post on the UC Davis School’s Facebook page. “She quickly started eating bland meals and was content taking her painkillers. To assist stabilize her neck fracture and reduce her range of motion while she healed, Loca was also given a padded neck bandage in addition to the Exo-K9.While required to wear the mask, Loca was prohibited from engaging in any of her usual activities. She was unable to chew on anything like toys or bones. Eating and drinking were particularly challenging for her. Before her wounds were fully healed, she was fed a pap. We wish Loca the best of success and anticipate that she can return to her regular life soon!
